"Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me" (NIV).
This may not be a big loud-roaring waterfall, but it does speak to me about the heart of God and how He speaks to me. God desires to communicate deeply with us frequently, and He wants to hear our response. We usually think of communication with God as prayer, and that is not wrong. Prayer is the primary means of communication between us and God. Unfortunately, we often make prayers a list of wants, desires, and instructions without giving God a chance to reply. It is appropriate to make our requests and needs known to God, but we must remember, communication is best when it is a two-way street. It is a blessed thing to hear from God, to hear Him speak to our hearts. To have that occur, we have to be quiet while in prayer. Prayerful listening is a skill that we need, and the only way to get it is to go to prayer and be quiet. Goes not speak on demand, but He does speak when He knows that our hearts are open, that we are actively listening and eager to hear what He has to say. Learning how to hear the voice of God takes time, effort, and patience, but the result is always worth the effort.
