“But, I haven't learned how to be a harvester. I've had no training.” Yeah, there is training involved. Have you learned how to pray? Have you learned how to make friends? Have you learned how to talk with your friends? I'll bet you can answer “yes” to all three of those questions. You have had the training you need!
In John 4:36-38 (NIV) Jesus says, “Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. Thus the saying, 'One sows and another reaps' is true. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.” We may not see the results of our labor – someone else may harvest what we sowed, and we may receive the harvest of what someone else has sown. Is the harvester able to harvest if no one has sown? The Christian life you live may well lead someone else to be attentive to a salvation message heard later. If you have sown and someone else has harvested, you have had a great hand in that harvest.
Many are believing that the final harvest is soon. I don't pretend to know whether it is or not, but in any case, I do believe that the fields are "ripe for harvest," as Jesus said in Matthew 9:37-38
Am I saying we should all be out on the street corners preaching Jesus or trying to talk our friends into salvation every time we speak with them? No, I'm not--there is a time and a place to talk to friends about Jesus and His saving grace, but I believe God will ordain the time and place and will provide the words to say. Living a daily Christian life is a witness that speaks volumes.
You may think that harvesting is a specialized task that requires special qualifications, learning, and skills. Well, it is specialized and it does require all these things. The first qualification is a personal saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. The second qualifications is – Wait, there is no second qualification! You are qualified!
"Then he said to his disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.'" (NIV)
Be encouraged--you are a harvester! you have the needed qualification, you have received the special training and you have the special abilities. Enjoy the harvest--you are a part of it!
“But, I'm not a pastor. I don't know how to preach or give a salvation message.” Have you accepted Christ? Are you living in His grace? Has He forgiven you of your sins? Can you describe what Christ means to you? If you have accepted Christ as savior, you are living a Christian life. I'll bet you even make mistakes and sometimes sin. That doesn't excuse you. We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God. If we were perfect, others would think they could never live up to the necessary level to become a Christian, so sinning is not an excuse. You have the special abilities!
