"As soon as the meal was finished, he insisted that the disciples get in the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he dismissed the people.  When the crowd dispersed, he climbed the mountain so that he could be by himself and pray.  He stayed there alone, late into the night." (Message)

Matthew 14:22-23

Jesus Prayed from Evening until Night

This prayer interlude comes between two miraculous events.  The people He dismissed, a crowd of at least 5000, had been fed from the offering of a lad's lunch.  Jesus multiplied it so all could eat, and there were lots of leftovers, twelve baskets.  After prayer, Jesus met His disciples while they were battling strong winds and waves on the lake.  He met them by walking to them on the water.  I think it is important to note that between these two miracles, Jesus felt the need to get alone and pray.  If Jesus needed time alone to pray, I certainly do.  Group prayer and prayer with a prayer partner are definitely important, but there are times when we need to speak to God alone.  Maybe that's because that's when we have the best opportunity to hear directly from our Father.  That's something I need to do more, and the peaceful time of sunset into nightfall is a great time.  At that time, I am probably most at peace, like the peaceful scene shown above.
